One phone number for home, two more for work, another for your mobile—Google Voice aims to change that. The new free service, which gives you one internet-based number that dials all your phones, “will take years to reach its full potential,” but it looks promising.

The service allows users to block certain devices at certain times, or make sure a certain caller always reaches a certain phone. It asks unknown callers who they are, tells you before you answer, and lets you send them straight to voicemail—at which point “you can use the slick ‘listen in’’ feature to eavesdrop as the message is being left.” So far the service is in limited trials, “but that was also true of a little Google service called Gmail when it launched five years ago.”

A 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled to death yesterday by a pet python owned by her mother’s boyfriend, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Charles Darnell noticed that his 8-foot-long albino Burmese python had escaped from its aquarium when he awoke yesterday morning. He found it on top of the girl in her bedroom and immediately began stabbing it.

The girl, who had a bite mark on her head, was dead when emergency crews arrived. Police are questioning Darnell, who could face child endangerment charges, in addition to a misdemeanor for owning a python without a permit. Darnell also has a 6-foot boa constrictor, but its container was secure. Two other young children also live in the house.

Don’t count out Vibe, Quincy Jones tells Ebony. Despite this week’s announced end to its print edition, Jones says the hip-hop publication he founded 16 years ago will continue online. “I’m trying to buy my magazine back now,” Jones said. “They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’ma take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

“We gotta get into the 21st century,” the legendary producer continued. “They’re over the same way as the record business. We have got to get into this century.” Vibe will also apparently print its forthcoming—and final—issue, contrary to previous reports.

The concert promoter AEG Live released approximately one minute of video from Michael Jackson’s final performance, a June 23rd rehearsal for his planned “This Is It” tour.

In the video released Thursday, the 50-year-old singer appears a step slower than he was in his twenties and thirties, but he is in good voice as he works through the song “They Don’t Really Care About Us.”

Jackson interacts with a female lead guitarist and several backup dancers, before breaking into a “Thriller”-type choreographed march with them at the song’s end.

At the end of the short clip, a director offstage says “Hold for applause, hold for applause… fade out.”

A photographer who was there during the rehearsal also said Jackson looked like his old self.

Jackson died two days after this video was shot of apparent heart failure. The official coroner’s report determining the official cause of death is still pending.

The Thriller superstar was due to perform a 50-date residency in the U.K., beginning later this month (Jul09), and he was rehearsing vigorously for the spectacular in the days leading up to his death last week (25Jun09).
But he had an extra special treat in store for fans – he wanted to share the stage with his eldest child, Prince Michael Jr., according to Jackson’s former publicist Stuart Backerman.
He tells Usmagazine.com, “He was planning on doing a short duet with his son, Prince. He knew his kids would enjoy it.
“He wanted his kids to see him perform at least once to get the vibe of the Michael Jackson mania.”
And the father and son duet was so top secret, even tour promoters at AEG Live were unaware of the family affair, with bosses admitting they had “no knowledge” of Jackson’s plans.

Drake’s debut album, “Thank Me Later” will be in stores soon, no current release date is set, but it is slated to be released later this year.

Firefox, once lauded for “speed, stability, and customizability,” seemed lately to have fallen behind the competition—but with version 3.5, out today, it’s back and better than ever, writes Farhad Manjoo for Slate. The new version “adds a much-needed speed boost” alongside bug fixes. And best of all, its use of updated HTML code could “prompt a re-engineering of the Web itself.”

Firefox’s popularity may push Web designers to do more with HTML 5, which boasts, for example, better video capabilities than the current version of the code. Meanwhile, the new Firefox “launches quickly, fires up complex sites like Gmail and Google Maps without any hiccups, and runs tons of open tabs without crashing,” Manjoo writes. “Firefox, finally, is back.”

Photos from Michael Jackson’s last performance, taken just two days before his death, have surfaced and show the King of Pop rehearsing for his upcoming London tour.

Jackson, dressed in several stage outfits and showing off his dance moves with backup dancers, was photographed at a rehearsal inside L.A.’s Staples Center on June 23 where “he had great energy,” according to producer Ken Ehrlich, an executive at AEG, the company that was promoting the singer’s tour.

Ehrlich, who watched the performance and met with Jackson, tells PEOPLE, “He was definitely in rehearsal mode [and] wasn’t giving it full out. But vocally, he had started to really project. I thought he was in great form. He just seemed really healthy. He really looked good and he was very upbeat.”

During their brief 20-minute conversation, Jackson was “cracking jokes,” adds Ehrlich. “He was having a good time. During rehearsal, I could tell that he was feeling it. He was feeling good. He was on his way to giving a great performance.”

A US Airways flight to Los Angeles was diverted to Albuquerque after a passenger removed all of his clothing mid-flight, forcing flight attendants to cover him with a blanket before he was arrested.

Keith Wright, 50, of the Bronx in New York, was taken into custody by airport authorities after he allegedly disrobed while sitting in his seat in the back of Flight 705 on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The plane carrying about 148 passengers from Charlotte to Los Angeles landed in Albuquerque about 6:45 p.m., US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder said.

Wright was unresponsive when asked by a flight attendant to put his clothes back on, said Dan Jiron, a spokesman for the Albuquerque airport. Authorities suspect the passenger may have been drunk or on prescription drugs.

“She asked him on more than one occasion to put on his clothes. She covered him with a blanket and he took that off,” Jiron said.

Wright allegedly became combative when flight attendants tried to cover him with the blanket and fasten his seat belt, the FBI said Wednesday in a news release.

Two off-duty law officers who were passengers on the flight helped the flight attendants subdue and handcuff Wright before the flight landed, Jiron said.

Passenger Ginny Keegan of Detroit was sitting in the front of the plane.

“All of a sudden there was a bunch of activity and a lot of loud things going on and all of a sudden people started getting out of their seats in the back of the plane,” she said.

Passengers were notified of a violent passenger as the plane began to approach Albuquerque, but Keegan said no one was fearful.

“No one was really panicking. The flight attendants seemed to handle it very well,” she said.

She said the man was “completely naked” as he was taken in handcuffs off the plane.

As the plane took off again, Keegan said the usual announcement to please fasten your seat belts came over the loudspeakers with a twist.

The message included “a reminder to everybody to please keep your clothing on. It got a couple chuckles,” Keegan said.

The flight attendants also were dealing with an unrelated onboard medical emergency at the same time, which exacerbated the situation, the FBI said.

Wright is in federal custody on a federal charge of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. He is expected to appear in federal court in Albuquerque on Thursday.

It was not immediately known if Wright has a lawyer.

Kevin Jonas, the eldest member of the teen heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers, may soon be able to shed his purity ring as Wednesday People magazine reported the 21-year-old pop star is now engaged.

Danielle Deleasa, a 22-year-old former hairdresser who Jonas met two years ago in the Bahamas, quickly said yes to his proposal, but the two have not set a wedding date yet.

He popped the question after taking an overnight flight from a concert in Vancouver, and showing up at her doorstep in New Jersey, on his knee with ring in hand.

“It was tough performing last night, knowing that I was going to ask the biggest question in my life to the most amazing girl in the world,” People quoted Jonas as saying.

His younger brothers, 19-year-old Joe and 16-year-old Nick, are still on the market. All prominently wear purity rings, symbolizing their promise to refrain from sex until marriage.

The Jonas Brothers, who soared to fame as members of Disney’s stable of teenage stars, last week scored their second No. 1 album in less than a year on the U.S. pop album chart when “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” sold 250,000 units. But first-week sales were less than half of those for their previous studio effort.
